Is MLM A Scam?

Copyright © Paul Birdsall, Your Online Success Partner

What is Multi-Level Marketing?

Also known as affiliate or network marketing, the idea behind this type of marketing is that it rewards the seller not only for direct sales of products but for the recruitment of other affiliate marketers, as well as for the directing of traffic towards the parent company.

MLM has received a bad rep in the online world, often closely associated with scam
artists and pyramid schemes. When people hear the term Multi-Level Marketing, they
often mislabel it as unethical or even illegal.

So, is it illegal?

There is nothing illegal about Multi-Level Marketing; illegal activity tends
to occur due to the bad apples that are, in fact, running pyramid schemes, yet are
fronting themselves as legitimate MLM companies. Some of the biggest health &
wellness companies are large-scale affiliate marketers. They are driven by affiliate
partners who bring new customers back to the parent website, and they continue to
expand successfully, operating within the legal realms of honest MLM.

Why has MLM developed such a bad rep? The Internet is still a comparatively new social medium.

The growth and wealth of information offered by the online world is
infinite and unprecedented. The world is still in the early stages of learning how to
regulate the business side of the virtual world, and because of this uncertainty of how to
deal with the powers of the Internet, it!s still a free-for-all online. Because the Internet is
as anonymous as you want it to be, this is inviting to scam artists who want to make a
quick buck off of other people!s belief in “get rich quick” schemes.

Until we sort out how to regulate the online business world - and because of the
lightning speed growth of the Internet, we may never be able to - we must be very
cautious in the business we do and trust our instincts. Business is trial and error, and
this applies to the home-based business world on the Internet; you may have to try out
a few opportunities until you find the one that works for you.

The reality is you have to be careful with which mentor/affiliate marketing company you
choose to go with, since there is vast misrepresentation online, and it is difficult
(sometimes impossible) to police this fraudulent activity.

The best thing you can do to make sure you!re not on your way to becoming another
Internet statistic of being taken in by a scam artist is to research your company of
interest. Check out their reputation with the Better Business Bureau or whatever
business regulation industry you have faith in.

The next step is to look for others who have had experiences with the company you!re
researching. Check out testimonials - do they go anywhere, or simply lead you to
spam? Is your mentor available for support, leadership and training? Can you actually
get a hold of your mentor, whether it!s by phone, through email or even in person? Do
the sign-up fees (if there are any) seem inflated and unreasonable? Trust your instincts
- they're usually right.

If an MLM company is operating ethically and legally, there are legitimate business
opportunities for affiliate partners. There are endless business ventures via the Internet,
just be cautious in who you choose to go with and put your faith in. If you head into the
home-based business world of Multi-Level Marketing with both eyes open, the possibility of making real money does exist - you just have to find it by developing skills and treating it like a serious business.

Here's Why You Should Start A Home-Based Business Online

Economic times are tough. Your credit card debt is taking you forever to pay off. You’re worried about job security. Your mortgage is high. Your bills are endless. You feel like you can never get ahead when you’re barely getting by. You need another source of income, but between your full-time job, family and other commitments, you just don’t have the time. The answer: start a home-based business.

Welcome to the Internet. If you want to get out of debt, get ahead and create a secondary source of income for your family, the best way to do this is to start thinking out of the box and start thinking online. There are a number of ways to make money through the Internet, here are just a few:

Multi-Level Marketing (MLM): this is also known as Network Marketing. This is a form of marketing that compensates sellers for both the product they sell and the sales from people they have directed to the company. Those involved with MLM are usually rewarded on a commission basis, through a trickle- down effect: a customer base is expanded through MLM, whereby each marketer is granted a commission as the network expands. Successful MLM results in a number of people receiving royalties from the sales of one person. Successful MLM utilizes social networking mediums such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter.

Direct Sales Marketing: this is a form of marketing, usually unsolicited, which involves the seller directly sending messages to the consumer (through emails, phone calls, etc.). The consumer directly responds to the seller, such as by calling a toll-free number or going to a website. This is also referred to as direct response marketing, and it’s more personal than some other forms of marketing. Some online channels of Direct Sales Marketing include: email, Internet banner ads and pay-per-click ads.

Affiliate Marketing: this is a form not too dissimilar from MLM, but focuses less on building networks and more on driving traffic to websites. Affiliates make money from their marketing efforts for the visitors and/or customers (traffic) brought to various websites. Some common channels for Affiliate Marketing include: search engine optimization (SEO), email marketing and paid search engine marketing. This concept of revenue sharing is becoming increasing popular among Internet marketers.

These are only a few ways to tap into the world of Internet marketing. The best way to start making a solid secondary income is to begin a home-based online business – be it selling products for a company, building networks, selling advertising space on your own website or being paid to drive traffic to various websites. There are so many ways to tap into the online marketing world from the comforts of your own home. Join thousands of others just like you who have reaped the benefits of having a home-based business.

Online Networking: Getting Connected

Copyright © Paul Birdsall, Your Online Success Partner

Online business networking is not only advantageous to the entrepreneur – it is a crucial component to online success. How can you compete with your fellow online entrepreneurs if you’re not marketing and developing your online presence? You can’t. By following a few simple steps, you can clinch your online marketing campaign and develop the network you need.

Utilize networking mediums, such as: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Nexopia and Flickr. It may sound time-consuming and narcissistic, but it’s a simple, free and quick way to link up with hundreds, eventually thousands, of people without ever having to meet them face-to-face. Doesn’t that sound less time-consuming than taking potential customers out for costly lunches?

Start a blog. Even if you have a website, start a blog – and update it daily! New content will keep your presence a priority on the internet. You can set your security settings to whatever works for you. Be careful to limit how much personal information you give out online. Such caution will pay off in the long run, as you can never forget that the internet is a fairly anonymous medium. By not revealing too much personal information, you can protect yourself, yet develop the exposure you need through online networking.

Link, link and then link some more. Target industry sites to link to your website and/or blog, as this will not only connect you with others in your field, but it will also raise your status with search engines. Remember: search engines like links; the more pages you create and link to your website, the more favourable your ranking will be. That’s the whole goal: for people to google key words linked to your industry and your website to be among the top in the search results...nobody looks at the seventh page of search results when they can get what they’re looking for on the first page.

Two key words: articles and press releases. If you’re not a writer, don’t pretend to be; you’ll only waste valuable networking time to be frustrated by your inability to write something that is marketable. Freelance writers and writing services are available online at a low cost. The more articles and press releases you can have written about what you do, the better. It all results in hits, links to your website and creates the traffic you need to increase your online sales.

If you start out with these few basic tidbits of advice, you will undoubtedly soar to financial freedom with your online success. Get networking with your online presence before your competition surpasses you!

Money From Home How Not To Get Scammed Again!

When you are online and you expose yourself to the world at large you are always opening yourself up to getting scammed.

Hopefully you haven’t given away too much personal information; if you have been scammed before though there are steps you can take so that even though you are trying to make money from home, you won’t get scammed again. It’s a tough act to follow; to judge who is just curious and interested and who is trying to scam you out of your money, your time, and your identity. However if you follow a few steps you can make sure that the money you are making from home does not come at the expense of your having to be scammed again.

Working at home is many people’s dream and if you are able to make money from home, you have probably felt the rub of somebody’s trying to do you wrong in one way or another. Hopefully you have protected yourself in as good a manner as possible; while precautions won’t always protect you 100%, there are things you can do to minimize your exposure online and prevent yourself from being scammed again.

One of the biggest mistakes many people make is giving out too much personal information to the wrong people. This is where getting scammed begins and ends for nearly anyone who has been scammed before; it’s your personal information so protect it well lest you get scammed again. Whether this personal information be your bank account number, social security number, driver’s license number, or other identifying characteristics like your birth date or your mother’s maiden name, when you give this stuff to the wrong persons, you are bound to get scammed.

Perhaps one good way to avoid this is ask before you speak or write down this information; why does this person need this information? If you can’t see a reason that the person you’re giving the information to would need this information, then ask! The least that could happen is that they tell you! If you’re speaking with someone it can be tough so if you are still unsure ask to see their company’s protocol in writing. It may slow things down a little bit, but the benefit of not having your identity stole and not having yourself be scammed is voluminous by comparison.

When you have a home business, this is the way that you make money at home. Just because this is your “job” does not mean that you should take it any less seriously. By that rationale, your whole frame of mind should always be questioning the things that you’re doing so that you don’t get scammed now or ever again. While it may get a little exhausting to be in such a defensive stance all the time at your home and it may not come naturally, if you remember that you are in a business setting, that you are trying to protect your own identity, and that you may have been scammed before it, adopting this persona will help you from ever getting scammed again.
